Picking up your rental car at SJO Airport after 6pm is not advisable: Roads and highways in Costa Rica are dark after 6pm, without street signs, and also used by pedestrians, dogs, bikes and motor bikes without any lights. At night you also have a bigger chance it will rain and driving in the dark when it rains is no good recipe for a safe ride. Also, taking a taxi transfer at night may save you 1 day car rental. Most car rental companies will deliver your rental car for a small fee next morning to our B & B

Hotels in downtown San Jose are located 20-30 minutes EAST of the airport.
When you arrive at San Jose International Airport located in Alajuela, NOT in San Jose, see Airport SJO below and you want to travel next day to Arenal, Guanacaste, Puntarenas, Jaco or Quepos, it makes little sense to stay in a San Jose downtown hotel (bottom right below).
It means you have to travel next day back to the International Airport and continue your journey in westbound direction (Highway 3) or northbound direction (Panamerican Highway / Costa Rica Highway 1) See map below for visual explanation
